Country Music playlist
Ever since hearing Olivia Newton-John’s great country hit “If You Love Me” in 1974 on country music radio, I have followed and played country music. I believe that the 1970’s were a greater era for country music than most people realize. The variety of sounds of country music that came out from the 1970’s through the early 2000’s, was incredibly diverse and melodic. With that said, and after learning music from all these eras, the 1990’s, I believe will go down in history as one of the greatest eras in country music ever. Patty Loveless, Mark Chestnut, George Strait, Suzy Bogguss, Mary Chapin-Carpenter. Need I say more? As far as newer stuff, the music of The Zac Brown Band is a shining example of 2000’s country music that is both new and yet true to the genre. I am thankful for artists like that as we all should be! Country Music has been a huge influence on my repertoire and composing style. In fact, I played much more country music than pop / rock for many years until the 2000’s.
There are people I know who love it when I play country music on the piano or keyboards, yet will not listen to the original song. This I believe is because they are hearing the true beauty of the musical composition without the singers distracting them, AND they are perhaps not a fan of country style singing or twang accents in the voices on many songs. Still there is much of this music that isn’t “twangy,” but they would never know, because stereotypes are hard to break through to people who carry them. My music therefore helps bridge them to good music without fear of such twang. They end up really liking songs in my instrumental version that they might not ever listen to in the regular singing format. It happens all the time!
